About
The folks at HondurasChildren have a unique set of skills and a variety of experiences supporting educational and humanitarian projects. We are all volunteers!
As we collaborate to create viable opportunities for children in Honduras, we welcome volunteers, sponsors and co-operation with other organizations with similar goals.
Our work with children –
We want our children to make good choices, so we help them distinguish between fact, opinion, interpretation, and judgment.
We encourage creative problem solving – - so we inspire children to use their imaginations.
We support our children as critical thinkers, so we invite them to ask questions and evaluate potential answers.
We expect our children to become engaged citizens – - so we hold them accountable for their actions.
We wish for our children to live in a peaceful world, so we model solving conflicts without violence.
An introduction –
Charlie and Amalia Kirkhum met while on a mission trip to Honduras to help the victims of the devastating Hurricane Mitch. One thing led to another and a few years later they wer
e married and living in El Porvenir! Charlie is from the United States. Amalia grew up in the La Ceiba area of Honduras but lived in the states for more than 30 years.
When they first arrived in Honduras, all they knew was that they wanted to work with children and they quickly learned that it doesn’t take much to get started! At first they just got to know the children and soon more and more started showing up at their house. They offered projects and activities, often fed the children lunch or dinner and once they started ‘movie nights’, things really took off! Quickly outgrowing the space in their yard, it was clear they needed more room. With funding and support from Amigos of Honduras and the mayor of the town of El Porvenir, land was donated to build a Kinder and construction began in 2007. The Kinder was completed in 2008 and the first official school year began with 20 children on January 16, 2009. As two of the founding directors, Amalia serves as President of HondurasChildren and Charlie serves as Treasurer. Contact Charlie & Amalia at charlie@honduraschildren.org.
Eve Horowitz coordinates our international volunteers and is focusing on
fundraising & development for HondurasChildren. Eve has expanded the initial HondurasChildren programs to now include Vacation Activities (VAP) and a partnership to operate the Porvenir English Project (PEP). Eve began visiting Honduras in 1992 and initially considered sponsoring a child as a learning experience for her own two kids. As she understood more about impoverished and neglected children in Honduras, it soon became a larger mission as she realized how her actions and support could create immediate, tangible improvement in their lives. Eve brings a blend of creative and operational strengths to HondurasChildren. With 20+ years of management & leadership experience, she is an accomplished fundraiser and commercial writer and specializes in the area of training and development. With a B.A. in Education, she also has a Certificate in Fundraising from the University of Pennsylvania and is currently enrolled at the International Institute for Restorative Practices. Eve travels to El Porvenir and Guanaja several times each year and considers Honduras her second home! She views her involvement with HondurasChildren as, “a wish come true” and as a founding director, serves as the Vice President of HondurasChildren. Contact Eve at volunteer@honduraschildren.org.

Thanks to our friends . . .
We are so grateful to our friend Dave Riley and Amigos of Honduras for their ongoing support and advice as we grew into an official U.S. non-profit. Amigos of Honduras is a 501c3 non-profit and acted as an ‘umbrella’ for HondurasChildren during 2009-10. Dave Riley and Amigos are also volunteers, have no paid staff and virtually no overhead. They are based in Centerville, Utah and do humanitarian work in the Comayagua area of Honduras. Amigos is not affiliated with any church or religious organization. Check out their work at http://amigosofhonduras.org/.
Lisa Würstl is the Donations Manager for HondurasChildren. She organizes and maintains our Sponsor Program, connecting donors with the projects they wish to support and she coordinates with our in-Honduras volunteers to facilitate communication from the children to the sponsors. Lisa has been doing volunteer and social work since the age of 15, and in 2008, she volunteered at a Kinder in Honduras for half a year. Touched deeply by the experience, she has been supporting programs in Honduras ever since. Joining HondurasChildren in 2012, Lisa feels that volunteering as the Donations
Manager / Sponsor Rep is the perfect way to continue supporting the needs of impoverished Honduran children while leading a busy work life in the United States. Originally from Germany, Lisa has lived in several countries around the world and has visited even more. Having studied Hospitality Management in the Netherlands and Spain, she currently lives in Memphis, Tennessee and works for Marriott Hotels & Resorts. Contact Lisa at sponsor@honduraschildren.org.
