El Porvenir Construction Project:

Improving Homes for “The Future”

The following project info was submitted by Jim Beal and Carly Sellers on behalf of themselves and other current HondurasChildren volunteers working in El Porvenir.  Organization and fundraising for this project has been 100% managed by our international volunteers.  We urge you to read about these special projects and to help support this strategic and highly valuable effort.

El Porvenir Construction Project 3 El Porvenir means, “The Future”.  Through our work with the children of El Porvenir, we have noticed that many families lack the basic resources necessary to raise their children in a sanitary, healthy environment.  Although our primary focus is on working with children in an educational setting, we feel inspired to try to address some of the underlying factors that contribute to health issues, in hopes of improving the lives of our students and their families.  We teach the kids about health and hygiene in our programs and these construction projects are a great way for us to reach out even further into the community in order to provide families with the simple necessities that many of us take for granted.

For the El Porvenir Construction Project, we intend to build sustainable structures that require little maintenance so that they will benefit the families for a longer period of time.  The majority of our time will be devoted to building out-house style bathrooms for families, including toilets, showers, sinks, and walls.  Based on the needEl Porvenir Construction Project 2s of the families we are working with, we may also build furniture, pilas (large sinks/tubs full of clean water for washing, etc.), or pour concrete floors.

It is important to note that the El Porvenir Construction Project is run entirely by the current HondurasChildren volunteers and we will be the ones doing the construction, along with the families’ participation.  We understand that it is vitally important for the families who benefit to be involved in the whole process so that they have a sense of ownership over the projects.  Our goal is to help families who are working hard to better their lives and we aim to provide them with the resources and means to do so.  Additional members of the community have also agreed to volunteer their time to help!  Specifically, one of the men who attends our free adult English class (Porvenir English Program / PEP) and who has construction experience in repairing the roads in town, has agreed to contribute time to working on these projects to benefit others in his community.

One of our first projects will be to build doors and windows for a family with 6 children, including a newborn baby.  They are living in a mud hut and they currently place sheets of metal oveEl Porvenir Construction Project 1r the window and door areas, which are not secure.  We also plan to build this family a bathroom, or to make improvements on their neighbor’s bathroom (which is now simply a toilet with tarps around it) so that the two families can share.  Another project we are working on is to build a couple of communal bathrooms in an area where several families live.  These bathrooms will benefit over 30 people.

If you are also interested in helping, please considering making a donation  to the El Porvenir Construction Project!  Every little bit counts and when you donate through the HondurasChildren website, your donations are tax-deductible.  Since it is all voluntary labor, the donations will go directly toward purchasing construction materials required for making basic sanitary and safety improvements on the houses of poor families in El Porvenir.
